📚 Step-by-Step Entry Path (India - SSC/UPSC)
Step 1 – Graduation
Bachelor's Degree
Completion of a degree from a recognized university in any stream. While all streams are eligible, knowledge of Law, Economics, or Science is helpful for specialized appraisal roles.
Step 2 – Competitive Exam
SSC CGL or UPSC CSE
Most enter via the **SSC CGL** (Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level) for "Inspector (Preventive Officer)" or "Inspector (Examiner)" roles. Direct Group A entry (IRS - Customs) is via the **UPSC Civil Services Exam**.
Step 3 – Physical & Medical Standards
Fitness Test
For Inspector roles, candidates must meet specific height, chest, and physical endurance criteria (walking/cycling tests) and pass a medical fitness examination.
Step 4 – Training
NACIN Academy Training
Recruits undergo professional training at the **National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes & Narcotics (NACIN)**. This includes learning Customs Law, anti-smuggling techniques, and weapon handling.
Step 5 – Field Deployment
Deployment at Ports/Airports
Initial posting as an Inspector or Appraiser. You will be responsible for cargo examination, baggage screening, and enforcing the Customs Act at international entry/exit points.
